Lettering my name
Personal project, 2019
This project was initially inspired by the distinctive angular letters of Gustav Klimt’s signature. Whilst gazing upon his work in a recent exhibition, I decided that I wanted to create something similar, I tried to imitate his style, but it just didn’t work with the letters in my name. As I worked to improve it, the design developed in a completely different direction and I came to the realisation that I’m more inclined towards curves than angles.
As I refined the Letters and their relationship with each other, the characters started to look fun and exuberant. Some satisfying combinations formed – the B and A curl up into each other, the R embraces the A extending its arm around it and the ‘K’ and ‘R’ join in a protective arch over the ‘e’. There is also, a completely unintentional hint of fifties/sixties design style. Perhaps suggested by the flared blossoming terminals and contrasting weights of the strokes.
