Designer for hire
Personal project, 2019
‘Designer for hire’ is the beginning of a big new project. These two small animations started as scribbles in the sketchbook and have been developed as possible components of a showreel that will showcase my talents as a motion designer.
Looking for a quirky and memorable way to introduce myself. I animated my face with a message inscribed on my protruding tongue – ‘Designer for hire’. Intended to be playful and provocative, and not rude or offensive. I wanted an amusing and engaging attention grabber. Think of Albert Einstein’s cheeky tongue exposé or the Maori’s ferocious war chant. Both leave memorable, lasting impressions.
The graphic of my glasses are emblematic of my four-eyed persona, providing a simplified version of my caricature and a trademark of myself. The twin lenses also act very nicely as dual TV screens displaying titles and messages.
Searching for a style that was edgy and had plenty of texture. I found Jeremy Child’s ‘Vintage Comic Creator’. Which when applied to flat 2D illustrations, instantly add textures, halftone patterns and that delicious, used retro look that is very fashionable at the moment.
