BDJ Portfolio, 2014
Redesign of the BDJ logo and masthead to conform to the new BDA visual identity. This also included the creation of the new BDJ Business and BDJ Student supplement mastheads and their presentation on a series mock-up magazine covers.
The British Dental Journal (BDJ), the official journal of the BDA, provides readers with ideas, opinions, developments and key issues in dentistry. It is supplemented by BDJ Business and BDJ Student. BDJ Business carries regular articles giving advice on all aspects of professional life, practice and management. BDJ Student is published three times a year and carries the latest news, careers advice, clinical articles and reports from dental schools across the UK.
I took the ‘B’ and ‘D’ from the original BDA logo (set in a customised version of FS Sally) and commissioned typography specialists Fontsmith to create a custom-made ‘J’. The original ‘J’ from the FS Sally Font was overshadowed by the much wider letters ‘B and D’. So we asked Fontsmith to create a stronger, wider ‘J’ with much more presence and identity.
A simplified version of the logo was also designed to create a range of branded portfolio supplements and appears as a prefix on the Business and Student publications. In the future it will also be applied to BDJ Team (online zine), BDJ Open (open access journal) and BDJ Jobs (recruitment website).
