Exhibition design

British Dental Association, 2014

I was commissioned by the BDA’s Dental Museum to create a visual identity for the exhibition ‘World War 1: Dentistry’. This included the design of one lead and two supporting images – to be used in various formats across web and print, exhibition panels and brochure.

To commemorate 100 years since the beginning of the First World War, the dental museum put on an exhibition highlighting dental disease amongst the troops on the front line. The exhibition ran from November 2014 to March 2015 and featured photographic imagery, illustrations and dental artefacts from the trenches.

Three photomontages were created to illustrate the following headlines: ‘Dentistry for the Troops’, ‘Dental Care on the Home Front’ and ‘Dental Services at the Outbreak of War’. A combination of collage, drawing and texturing were employed to make the images look authentic and visually stimulating.

Elements of the lead image were repurposed to fit a variety of formats. A small brochure was created to accompany the exhibition, and a poster, flyer and magazine editorial were produced to promote it. The brown colour palette was inspired by the muddy quagmire of the battlefield and trenches. The sans serif font ‘Plantagenet Cherokee’ was used to emphasise the serious nature of the historical subject and to create a punchy headline.
